Up-Cycled Train Case
A couple of weeks ago I bought a huge pot of Mod Podge at the Re-Tail Thrift Shop run by Rikki’s Refuge. My last blog post shows how I up-cycled popcorn containers into a beautiful May Baskets. They turned out so well, I’m starting to use Mod Podge to up-cycle other items.
Following are a couple pictures of a well worn, bland blue train case that got the special Mod Podge treatment. I also bought this case at Re-Tail. Take a look at the transformation!
Now I have a feeling that nothing is going to be safe from my foam brush and Mod Podge. Martin, Adam and the cats had better keep moving or they might be next!!!
Remember December
Wow! I know it’s been a while since I last posted a blog but this lady has been very busy making, taking and selling. I had a great show in Richmond and now that the dust has settled I am ready to make some great Christmas memories. The problem is, I won’t remember all the great stuff I did even a year from now, never mind 20 years from now. So I found a wonderful and easy way to keep my memories for each December. I will have to add this to my “day late and a dollar short” list of paper crafts because apparently this specific type of journal has been around for many years. I’m talking about a December Daily which has a page, or space, to write a little bit about what you did for each day in December.
Most of the December Daily journals I’ve seen on Pinterest and Youtube use nice new paper lines with all the coordinating embellishments. If you know me, however, you know that is not my style. I decided to create my December Daily in the Junk Journal style using only stuff I already had on hand. I won’t bore you with a page by page description because it would be January before I got it all written down. Instead I will just let you look at the pictures “gallery” style.
Before you look, however, I just wanted to mention a few things. First, the cover is made from the top of an old ornament box that I layered over some vintage wrapping paper. Second, there are envelopes, manila file folders, a piece from a box of cards, a manila mailing folder, a brown paper bag, a little white paper bag, old Christmas cards, a coin envelope, old book pages and tons of embellishments in this journal.
I had a lot of fun making it and plan to add more embellishments and doodles each day I write in it. Even though you won’t be able to make your own December Daily for this year, I encourage you to grab a notebook and write down the highlights of each day this December so you can remember all the good, bad and ugly times you may have. I guarantee you will be glad you did in the years to come!
- An old Christmas ornament box top layered over vintage wrapping paper.
- A page from an old children’s book.
- A piece of an old Christmas card box.
- An old Christmas card.
- Of course I had to put small donkeys in it!
- A manila mailing envelope.
- Half of a manila folder.
- Old ledger paper.
- A little white paper bag.
- Day 20 is my favorite page and is made from an envelope.
- A brown paper bag folded in half.
- More vintage wrapping paper.
Scrap Happy
There are some things you can never have enough of, like chocolate, love and money. Then there are those things that seem to multiply much to our dismay, like bills, trash and leftover craft supplies.Usually I can deal with a few extra scraps from paper projects but over time they have really gotten out of hand.
I have two boxes of small pieces of scrap booking papers, maps, wrapping papers, old book pages, advertisements and who knows what else. My name is Helen Hauser and I’m a paper hoarder. There, I publicly admitted it. I feel so much better. But what to do with them all? No, throwing them out is NOT an option. Since I have really been getting into journal and album making lately, I decided to make an itty bitty junk journal for a very special young lady.
First I got a cup of tea. Then I selected scraps of paper that had similar colors. Oh look, they all have pink. How did that happen? I also picked out some embellishments for the journal. Don’t worry if you don’t use everything you picked out because we can always find another project later (and it will give me some more blog fodder).
I picked one of the larger pieces to be the cover and then I randomly folded and layered the other pieces. Not all of the pieces were folded exactly in half either which gives you a more interesting journal. I folded an old coin envelope in half and added it. Unfortunately since it’s the end of the month I didn’t have any cash to put in it!
I even glued a folded piece of paper to an old Monopoly card so it could become a page.
I clipped all the inner pages together and then made three holes in the spine with an awl. I really wanted to use a power drill, but this journal is just too small for that much fun. Then I laid the outer cover, which is a bit larger, over the bundled pages and made holes in the cover to match.
I sewed up the spine with pink embroidery floss and a large needle. I just went in one hole and came out the next and when I got to the end I sewed back down sewing in the opposite direction. When I got to the end (which is also the beginning) I tied it off and added a little blue flower charm. I know that probably doesn’t sound like it makes any sense so just sew it up any way you want. If you want to cheat, you could even staple it together!
Next, I glued some seam binding ribbon around the spine which will be tied in a bow to close the journal. You could use any ribbon or string you happen to have on hand.
I decided to add a layer of paper over the ribbon to make it sturdier and to hide the ribbon, but if you wanted, you could just let the ribbon show.
I decorated the cover with words, pictures and embellishments I had on hand.
I embellished the pages with stamps, ephemera, lace snippets, words and cancelled postage stamps.
I think this little book turned out really cute. And to think this was all scraps and stuff I already had in my stash. It didn’t take that long to make, and once I figured out a system I should be able to speed up the process for the next ones I make.
My only regret is that this cute little journal did not make any visual dent in my stash. I will have to make journals for everyone I know, and even some people I don’t know, in order to use up my scraps. I think I’m going to need another cup of tea!!!
Fifty for Rosalie
If any of you are my friends on facebook you have seen pictures of an extremely abused dog named Rosalie. Thankfully, the saints at He’Art of Rescue haven’t given up on trying to save her. Rosalie’s story has really made an impact on my heart and I just grieve over the cruelty someone could subject this beautiful creature to. To read her story and see her picture you can go to this link:
http://cihangirheartofrescue.com/2013/03/04/saving-rosalie-four-years-of-neglect/
You can also get updates on her status on that site.
Our family made a donation to help pay for Rosalie’s care, however, it is only a small drop in a big bucket. I decided to make fifty pins to sell on Rosalie’s behalf. These pins have thin wood bases and simple roll back pins.
Each pin is unique. The pictures are sanded on the edges, inked for a slightly “aged” feel and sealed. I have chosen many different themes to chose from, so there is something for everyone!!!! They would look great pinned on your jeans jacket, hat, scarf , knapsack or Spring sweaters! Ordering instructions are at the bottom of this post.
These pictures are not so great, but I assure you the pins are! The colors are much brighter and prettier in real. If you click on the pictures to enlarge them, you will get a closer look at the details.
As these pins are all unique, sales will be first come, first serve AS MONEY IS RECEIVED. I’m sorry, but I feel time is of the essence and I don’t want to “reserve” pins and then not get Rosalie’s money. You may pay through Paypal to my account at: hfhauser@verizon.net. If you live close to me, you can contact me through facebook and we can arrange a meeting and you can pay by cash or check. The pins cost $2.00 each. Shipping within the 48 contiguous United States is $3.00 (no matter how many you order) and $6.00 everywhere else (no matter how many you order). If there is an excess left over from shipping costs, I will put that in with Rosalie’s donation. I am donating 100% of the sales of these pins to that precious dog! If you don’t know me personally you may check out my Etsy shop: MossyCottage. I am a reputable seller on Etsy and Ebay (Mossy Cottage).
Please help save Rosalie by chipping in for her mounting hospital costs. One person can’t make much difference, but together we can help change Rosalie’s life!!!
