A little over a year ago on May 27th, I posted a blog about smash books. I even showed one I made myself. Smash books and junk journals are what I call, ” Scrapbooking for the rest of us”. I haven’t gotten into proper scrapbooking yet, although I’ve seen some awesome mixed-media type layouts. Most of my photos are still lingering on my computer’s memory. The ones I have actually printed out are lingering away in photo boxes. “One day,” I tell myself. “One day!”
But what about the ticket stubs, playbills, receipts, candy wrappers, maps, postcards and other ephemera you want to hold onto? All of life’s little papers hold memories that deserve to be remembered. That is what junk journals and smash books are for. And the best part of junk journals is that there is absolutely no talent required to fill one. You can tape, glue or staple your papers in. No particular order is required. Then you can add doodles, stickers, sentiments or nothing. It’s entirely up to you.
I have filled up the junk journal I made a year ago and there is absolutely no empty spaces for anything else. IT IS STUFFED. So here are some random pictures from my stuffed junk journal.
In my next blog post I will show pictures of the awesome new junk journal that I got from my friend Camilla in a swap. And if you’d like to make a junk journal for yourself, see my post from May 27, 2013. If you’re not inclined to make your own journal, but still want one to fill, please visit my Etsy shop at: https://www.etsy.com/shop/MossyCottage?ref=si_shop where I have many to choose from. Once you start “smashing” things into a journal you’ll see why it’s become so popular!
Today I am going to teach you, or most likely re-teach you, how to make fun little paper pouches. Most of us made these when we were kids, we just can’t remember that far back!!! These little pouches can be filled with candy, cookies, candy, notes, candy, gift cards, candy, small toys or whatever
candy else you fancy. You can make them BIG or small, that’s up to you. Use any kind of paper, kraft, wrapping, maps, music, magazine pages, old book pages, vintage wall paper, old ledger paper, newspaper and the list goes on.
So let’s get started shall we?
First, cut a piece of paper in a square. Mine range from 7″ to 9″ square.
Fold the paper in half to form a triangle.
Fold the right side up and over until it reaches the very left edge. In this picture it looks like I didn’t fold it over far enough but that’s just because it popped up while I was taking the picture. I didn’t want to hold it down because then you would see how desperately I need a manicure!
Then fold the left side up and over to meet the very right edge. In this picture it looks like I folded it over too far and it’s hanging off the edge but that is just the camera angle. (See, I told you I needed to do my nails)!
Fold down the front point until it’s even along the top edge. Then flip it over and
fold over the other point on the back. At this point you can puff it out a bit and you’ll see how much room you’ll have to put
candy stuff inside.
Here is an assortment I made using different papers, sizes and embellishments. These are a great size for putting gift cards or $$$ in!!! See the one on the bottom left that say’s “16, Happy Birthday”? I’ll give you one guess who will be getting that next month, probably with some $$$ bills rolled up and put inside.
And here’s a special one I made for —– who will probably get it on Monday filled with my homemade chocolate chip cookies or peanut butter chocolate chip granola bars (I know she loves them)! Because I knew I was going to put a wire handle on this one, I put grommets in the punched holes to make them stronger so they would not tear.
This is such a fun little project and so easy. It’s nice to have a couple on hand to fill with
candy last minute gifts. But be careful though, they are addictive to make and decorate!!!!
If any of you are my friends on facebook you have seen pictures of an extremely abused dog named Rosalie. Thankfully, the saints at He’Art of Rescue haven’t given up on trying to save her. Rosalie’s story has really made an impact on my heart and I just grieve over the cruelty someone could subject this beautiful creature to. To read her story and see her picture you can go to this link:
You can also get updates on her status on that site.
Our family made a donation to help pay for Rosalie’s care, however, it is only a small drop in a big bucket. I decided to make fifty pins to sell on Rosalie’s behalf. These pins have thin wood bases and simple roll back pins.
Each pin is unique. The pictures are sanded on the edges, inked for a slightly “aged” feel and sealed. I have chosen many different themes to chose from, so there is something for everyone!!!! They would look great pinned on your jeans jacket, hat, scarf , knapsack or Spring sweaters! Ordering instructions are at the bottom of this post.
These pictures are not so great, but I assure you the pins are! The colors are much brighter and prettier in real. If you click on the pictures to enlarge them, you will get a closer look at the details.
As these pins are all unique, sales will be first come, first serve AS MONEY IS RECEIVED. I’m sorry, but I feel time is of the essence and I don’t want to “reserve” pins and then not get Rosalie’s money. You may pay through Paypal to my account at: email@example.com. If you live close to me, you can contact me through facebook and we can arrange a meeting and you can pay by cash or check. The pins cost $2.00 each. Shipping within the 48 contiguous United States is $3.00 (no matter how many you order) and $6.00 everywhere else (no matter how many you order). If there is an excess left over from shipping costs, I will put that in with Rosalie’s donation. I am donating 100% of the sales of these pins to that precious dog! If you don’t know me personally you may check out my Etsy shop: MossyCottage. I am a reputable seller on Etsy and Ebay (Mossy Cottage).
Please help save Rosalie by chipping in for her mounting hospital costs. One person can’t make much difference, but together we can help change Rosalie’s life!!!
